Radiocarbon dating:
Its a method that is based on the slow decay of radioactive carbon 14. Its a very minor piece of carbon. Carbon 14 comes from cosmic rays. Plants and Animals then "take up" the carbon. The animals who eat the plants then get the carbon 14. then the animals who eat those animals also get some of the carbon. Then when the plant or animal dies, half of its carbon 14 breaks down into carbon 12. and this happens every 5,700 years.
Some problems there are with radiocarbon dating is that it has a lot of technical problems. Radiocarbon dating until the 1980 needed a lot of carbon ( a few grams), which is more than the amount in bones. So they often radiocarbon dated some of the items in an area, and figured that everything else in the area are "associated with" the stuff they did radiocarbon date.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: Chapter 2

What role did ‘geography’ play in the story of the Maori and the Moriori?
The Moriori had a small population, and isolated, of hunter-gatherers. Who had the simplest technology and weapons. While the Maori (from New Zealand) were from a dense population of farmers, who were constanly in "ferocious" wars. And had more "advanced" technology and weapons.
